Bethlehem Steel
Steve, do they do regular tours, or was this something special? My son lives a couple miles from there and I've always wanted to take a look at that place. Even though it's been dead for many years, it still takes up a good part of their skyline. That whole town was built around Beth Steel. My son teaches, and is getting his degree, at Lehigh, which was founded to supply the steel industry with engineers and metallurgists.
Another place in the area that I'd love to visit, that's still very much in business, is Lehigh Heavy Forge. They've got some 10,000 ton presses that would be great to watch. And I'll bet they use more than a few Reil burners in their forge :-)

Marc, Our guide told me that it is very rare to have a large group like ours (20 people) tour the site. He said most of the folks visiting the site are some type of professionals or academics a couple at a time. One of our members is volunteering with the National Museum of Technology (I may have the name slightly wrong) which will be located at the site and arranged this for members of the PA and NJ groups. He has been working on it for some time. There were only twenty slots and they filled quickly with a waiting list besides. You might suggest to your son that he ask about a site tour at the museum offices which are at 530 Third street in the old bank building. I have no idea of their hours though. I'd love to get into Lehigh Heavy Forge also but I hear that's pretty hard to do. It would be a sight to see though.
I put up a few more pictures from Saturday's visit.
